As an ambassador for the Women’s Wine Hiking Society here in North Carolina, I’ve spent the last year watching a truly remarkable thing happen on the trail: the forging of genuine, women-owned community.
My greatest surprise has been observing the incredible courage it takes for a woman to join us. What makes a woman see a social media ad and say, “I’m going to spend an afternoon in the woods with 15 complete strangers”?
The answer isn’t a simple one, but it is deeply human: It’s the undeniable need for a new kind of connection when life is asking you to change.
The Leap into the Unknown
Our group is open to all women, and what I’ve learned is that our members arrive from every imaginable place in life. Some come from stable, established situations, seeking enrichment. Others arrive during a time of great upheaval—a career change, a move, a health challenge, or the simple, quiet evolution of their personal identity.
Taking a chance on a new group is perhaps the most courageous thing a woman can do during a transition. It requires the following:
- Admitting a need: Acknowledging that the current social structure isn’t fully serving the woman you are becoming.
- Embracing the vulnerability: Stepping into an unfamiliar space, signing up alone, and trusting that you will be welcomed.
Every woman who shows up has done the exact same thing. She is a woman, just like you, who decided that the risk of stepping out of her comfort zone was worth the potential reward of a real, supportive connection.
Friendships That Transcend the Trail
The trails are our greenhouse, and the peaks are our new found friendships. What we offer is more than a hike; it’s an intentional space for authenticity. Without the pressure of traditional social settings, conversation flows easily and honestly. You walk a mile with one person and share a dream; you share a laugh with another and hear about a recent challenge.
And then, the magic happens.
These connections don’t just stop when the wine glasses are packed away. I’ve witnessed women who met on our monthly hikes take their friendship far beyond the trail:
- Forming spontaneous, supportive groups to meet for coffee or weekend getaways.
- Showing up for each other through major life events, whether celebrations or crises.
- Finding new collaborators, mentors, or simply a reliable shoulder to lean on.
The true impact of our community is that we are simply providing the catalyst for the deep, lasting friendships that women crave, no matter their circumstances.
The Power of Betting on Yourself
This past month, I took my own leap, traveling from North Carolina to Utah to our Ambassador Retreat. After a long flight, I got into a car with a “WhatsApp friend,” drove hours to a small town, and shared a bunk room with strangers. Yes, there was a split second that I thought, “OMG, what if no one shows up to get me…I’m out here all alone.” That experience—and the friendships I’ve seen bloom on the North Carolina trails—showed me that the “why” for our women is universal. We are all looking for a supportive, non-judgmental community where we can show up as our full, authentic selves.
How do you know when it’s time to take that chance? You take the leap when the desire for a better, more connected future becomes louder than the fear of the unknown. Every time you sign up, every time you drive to the trailhead, every time you introduce yourself to a stranger, you are not just hoping for a connection; you are placing a powerful bet on yourself. You are declaring that your happiness, your need for community, and your personal growth are worth the risk.
The journey starts with that single, brave choice.
