No UT: Avalanche Safety & Map Reading Basics

About This Event

People automatically assume that avalanche conditions become safer as we head into spring. However, we get most of our snow from January to April. As temps warm, the number of wet slab avalanches increases.

It’s important to know where to find the avalanche report for where you’re going, how to read the report, and how to read terrain maps to better understand the report.

Join seasoned winter wine hiker, Kate Shepherd, for an informative workshop on avalanche safety and map reading basics. Gain knowledge essential to staying safe this winter and spring.

Over the course of 1.5 hours, Kate will cover the following topics in detail:

• Avalanches and snow conditions
• Apps and other tools for reading daily conditions
• Different types of snow and snow layers
• How temperatures and wind conditions affect conditions
• Overview of specialized avalanche gear
• Additional resources
