From hiking to volunteering at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary, this was a weekend to remember! The hikes we did took us to arches, slot canyons, sandstone formations unlike any seen before, coral pink sand dunes, and canyon overlooks.
After getting checked in to our cabin, a small group of us kicked off the weekend with a short sunset hike that rewarded us with sweeping views of Kanab. After the hike, we joined the rest of our crew for dinner and drinks at the Rocking V Café, an eclectic restaurant with a fun atmosphere and a crazy owner.
The next morning, we enjoyed coffee and breakfast at the cabin before hitting the trail for a 4.2-mile roundtrip hike to Bucktank Draw and Birthday Arch. Birthday Arch is located high up on cliffs along the western side of Bucktank Draw.
After the hike, our group of 16 split into 3 small groups, with one group heading to Horseshoe Bend, one group heading to complete another 4-mile roundtrip hike, and a third group heading to Lone Rock at Lake Powell before exploring the Toadstools on the way back to the cabin.
Saturday was dedicated to volunteering at the Best Friends Animal Sanctuary, which is located just 10 minutes outside of Kanab in the beautiful Angel Canyon. Best Friends Animal Sanctuary is home to more than 1600 dogs, cats, horses, birds, rabbits, potbellied pigs, and other farm animals and wildlife. The majority of our group worked in Dogtown, while some of our group worked with cats and farm animals. We wine hikers love volunteering almost as much as we love wine.
We decided Saturday night to wake up super early Sunday morning to drive into Zion National Park and watch the sunrise. This decision may have been made under the influence of alcohol. Tired and hungover, we loaded up our cars, said goodbye to the cabin, and made our way to Zion National Park for sunrise. Unfortunately, the Sunday morning skies were grey and dreary, so although there was no sunrise to see, the views were still worth the early morning wake-up.
Before heading home, we stopped at Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park. The grey clouds sprinkled rain lightly on us, but as you can see, our spirits weren’t dampened.
WWHS weekend getaways are an excellent opportunity to explore new places, make NEW friends, and create amazing memories with other women!
