SUMMARY:No. UT: Book Club Hike - Bitch: On the Female Species at Willow Lake
DESCRIPTION:About This Event\nJoin ambassador Alison Bond and co-founder Angelique Fish for our 3rd on-trail book club event of 2025! For this event\, we’ll read the book Bitch: On the Female Species by Lucy Cooke. Then\, on September 17\, we’ll do a short hike to Willow. Once there\, we’ll set up our chairs for our book club discussion–and hopefully see a moose (female\, preferably). \nBitch is a fierce\, funny\, and revolutionary look at the queens of the animal kingdom. Since Charles Darwin\, evolutionary biologists have been convinced that the males of the animal kingdom are the interesting ones—dominating and promiscuous\, while females are dull\, passive\, and devoted. \nIn Bitch\, Cooke tells a new story. Whether investigating same-sex female albatross couples that raise chicks\, murderous mother meerkats\, or the titanic battle of the sexes waged by ducks\, Cooke shows us a new evolutionary biology\, one where females can be as dynamic as any male. This isn’t your grandfather’s evolutionary biology. It’s more inclusive\, truer to life\, and\, simply\, more fun. \n  \n\n\n \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTRAIL RATING: Moderate (~590elevation gain) \nLENGTH: 2 miles RT \nCARPOOLING: Watch for an email from admin@winehikingsociety.com about 5-7 days before the event for coordination. This email will include a link to join a private WhatsApp chat for carpool coordination and last-minute event updates. \nALLTRAILS LINK: Willow Lake Trail \nGEAR: \n\nThe Ten Essentials\nItems on the Day Hike Packing List\nProper clothing / layers for summer evening hiking conditions\nProper footwear\nHeadlamp (which is part of the Ten Essentials)\nWater and trail snacks\nSomething lightweight to sit on while we stop to eat and drink (i.e.\, a backpacking chair\, rain jacket\, plastic bag\, etc.)\nHiking poles (optional but recommended)\n\n  \nUnless your four-legged friend can read and discuss the book\, your four-legged friend will need to stay home. SUMMARY:No. UT: Ranch Water at White Pine Lake (LCC) ~ Age 50+
DESCRIPTION:About This Event\nWhite Pine Trail in LCC is a bucket-list hike that earns its “hard” rating for its length rather than steepness. The trail follows an old jeep road\, making the path long but with a relatively gradual grade. This promises to be a great hike. Let’s get an early start\, as this parking lot fills up quickly on any weekend day. Plus\, we can take our time and savor this beautiful trail! \n  \nTRAIL RATING: Hard (2\,719 feet of elevation gain) – To join this hard hike\, you should be able to average 40-minute miles.
