SUMMARY:No. Utah: Jordan River Parkway Cleanup
DESCRIPTION:About This Event\nJoin Ambassador Alison Bond and the Jordan River Commission to show that you #LoveYourWatershed. \nThe Jordan River runs from Utah Lake north and empties into the Great Salt Lake. Four of Utah’s six largest cities border the river\, and more than a million people live in the watershed. A lot of trash and debris from roadway curbs and gutters enters the Jordan River where it is difficult to remove. \nSo come out and enjoy a leisurely cleanup stroll along the beautiful Jordan River Parkway which borders the river and includes natural areas\, botanical gardens\, golf courses\, and 40-miles of bicycle and pedestrian trails. \nFor those interested\, we’ll go out for lunch and drinks afterwards! \nCARPOOLING: Watch for an email from volunteering.whs@gmail.com about 5-7 days before the event for coordination. \nGEAR: \n\nProper clothing / layers for weather conditions\nProper footwear\nWater and trail snacks\nGardening gloves (or similar)\n\nPlease leave your four-legged friends at home. \nExact location TBD\, will be provided by the Jordan River Commission as we get closer to the event. \nALCOHOL NOT INCLUDED

SUMMARY:No. Utah: Indian Trail Cleanup
DESCRIPTION:About This Event\nJoin WHS Community Service Ambassador Alison Bond for a trail cleanup on Indian Trail\, one of her favorite hikes . \nOur route follows an old trail used by Native Americans and trappers to get from Ogden Valley to Ogden when the Ogden River was too high for travel through the canyon floor. The trailhead and lower area around Bonneville Shoreline Trail are both heavily used and will likely require a bit of cleanup. Then we will head up the bench to the trail. Since we are on the west side of the mountains and most of the trail is heavily forested\, we should have nice\, shady conditions most of the way. \nAllTrails lists this as an 8.4 mile hike anticipating you’d hike out and back. However\, we will either hike halfway to the viewpoint (where we will enjoy a refreshing bourbon\, blueberry infused cocktail)\, or to Ogden Canyon and shuttle some vehicles cutting the total length and elevation gain in half. \nTRAIL RATING: Moderate (1\,300 feet of elevation gain) \nLENGTH: 4.2 miles RT \nCARPOOLING: Watch for an email from volunteering.whs@gmail.com about 5-7 days before the event for coordination. \nALLTRAILS LINK: https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/utah/indian-trail \nGEAR: \n\nThe Ten Essentials\nProper clothing / layers for hiking conditions\nProper footwear\nWater and trail snacks\nSomething lightweight to sit on while we stop to eat and drink (i.e.\, a backpacking chair\, rain jacket\, plastic bag\, etc.)\nHiking poles (optional but recommended)\n\nFour-legged friends are welcome at this event. \nHappy Hour Beverage (recommended for event): Bourbon Blueberry Tonic Smash \nALCOHOL NOT INCLUDED

SUMMARY:Book Club: The Ride of Her Life at Lake Mary
DESCRIPTION:About This Event\nJoin ambassador Alison Bond and co-founder Angelique Fish for our third book club hike on summer solstice! \nHere’s how it works. We will host 4-5 book club hikes between May and October. Each book club hike will feature a different book. You’ll read the book beforehand and come to the hike ready to discuss it. For the hike\, we’ll hike to a lake or overlook\, where we’ll set up our chairs for our book club discussion. \nJuly 26th Book & Hike Info\nHere is short summary of the book: \nIn 1954\, sixty-three-year-old Maine farmer Annie Wilkins embarked on an impossible journey. She had no money and no family\, she had just lost her farm\, and her doctor had given her only two years to live. But Annie wanted to see the Pacific Ocean before she died. She ignored her doctor’s advice to move into the county charity home. Instead\, she bought a cast-off brown gelding named Tarzan\, donned men’s dungarees\, and headed south in mid-November\, hoping to beat the snow. Annie had little idea what to expect beyond her rural crossroads; she didn’t even have a map. But she did have her ex-racehorse\, her faithful mutt\, and her own unfailing belief that Americans would treat a stranger with kindness. \nAnnie\, Tarzan\, and her dog\, Depeche Toi\, rode straight into a world transformed by the rapid construction of modern highways. Between 1954 and 1956\, the three travelers pushed through blizzards\, forded rivers\, climbed mountains\, and clung to the narrow shoulder as cars whipped by them at terrifying speeds. Annie rode more than four thousand miles\, through America’s big cities and small towns. Along the way\, she met ordinary people and celebrities—from Andrew Wyeth (who sketched Tarzan) to Art Linkletter and Groucho Marx. She received many offers—a permanent home at a riding stable in New Jersey\, a job at a gas station in rural Kentucky\, even a marriage proposal from a Wyoming rancher. In a decade when car ownership nearly tripled\, when television’s influence was expanding fast\, when homeowners began locking their doors\, Annie and her four-footed companions inspired an outpouring of neighborliness in a rapidly changing world. \n \nTRAIL RATING: Moderate (849 elevation gain) \nLENGTH: 2.6 miles RT \nCARPOOLING: Watch for an email from admin@winehikingsociety.com about 5-7 days before the event for coordination. \nALLTRAILS LINK: https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/utah/lake-mary-trail \nGEAR: \n\nThe Ten Essentials\nProper clothing / layers for summer hiking conditions\nProper footwear\nHeadlamp (which is one of the Ten Essentials)\nBug spray\nWater and trail snacks\nSomething lightweight to sit on while we stop to eat and drink (i.e.\, a backpacking chair\, rain jacket\, plastic bag\, etc.)\nHiking poles (optional but recommended)\n\nThis hike is located in a water shed. SUMMARY:Book Club: Thirst at the Tower
DESCRIPTION:About This Event\nJoin ambassador Alison Bond and co-founder Angelique Fish for our second book club hike on summer solstice! \n\n\n\n\nJune 21st Book & Hike Info\nNOTE: The author has given us a discount code! Once you sign up\, we’ll send you to the code to save on your book purchase. \nHere is a short summary of the book: \n“By age 25\, Heather Anderson had hiked what is known as the ‘Triple Crown’ of backpacking: the Appalachian Trail (AT)\, Pacific Crest Trail (PCT)\, and Continental Divide Trail (CDT)—a combined distance of 7\,900 miles with a vertical gain of more than one million feet. A few years later\, she left her job\, her marriage\, and a dissatisfied life and walked back into those mountains. \nIn her new memoir\, Thirst: 2600 Miles to Home\, Heather\, whose trail name is ‘Anish\,’ conveys not only her athleticism and wilderness adventures\, but also shares her distinct message of courage–her willingness to turn away from the predictability of a more traditional life in an effort to seek out what most fulfills her. \nAmid the rigors of the trail–pain\, fear\, loneliness\, and dangers–she discovers the greater rewards of community and of self\, conquering her doubts and building confidence. Ultimately\, she realizes that records are merely a catalyst\, giving her purpose\, focus\, and a goal to strive toward.” \nTRAIL RATING: Moderate (538 elevation gain) \nLENGTH: 2.5 miles RT \nCARPOOLING: Watch for an email from admin@winehikingsociety.com about 5-7 days before the event for coordination. \nALLTRAILS LINK: https://www.alltrails.com/explore/trail/us/utah/alien-tower \nGEAR: \n\nThe Ten Essentials\nProper clothing / layers for warm temps that turn cooler at sunset\nHeadlamp (part of the Ten Essentials)\nProper footwear\nWater and trail snacks\nSomething lightweight to sit on while we stop to eat and drink (i.e.\, a backpacking chair\, rain jacket\, plastic bag\, etc.)\nHiking poles (optional but recommended)\n\nSince our four-legged friends can’t read or talk about the book\, let’s leave them at home. \nALCOHOL NOT INCLUDED

SUMMARY:Book Club: Wild at Willow Lake
DESCRIPTION:About This Event\nJoin ambassador Alison Bond and co-founder Angelique Fish for our first book club hike of 2023 (our first ever\, actually). We will host 4-5 book club hikes between May and October. \nHere’s how it works. Each book club hike will feature a different book. You’ll read the book beforehand and come to the hike ready to discuss it. For the hike\, we’ll hike to a lake or overlook\, where we’ll set up our chairs for our book club discussion. \nMay 24th Book & Hike Info\nWe’ll kick off our first book club event with Cheryl Strayed’s Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail. Here is a short summary of the book: \n“At twenty-two\, Cheryl Strayed thought she had lost everything. In the wake of her mother’s death\, her family scattered and her own marriage was soon destroyed. Four years later\, with nothing more to lose\, she made the most impulsive decision of her life. With no experience or training\, driven only by blind will\, she would hike more than a thousand miles of the Pacific Crest Trail from the Mojave Desert through California and Oregon to Washington State–and she would do it alone. Told with suspense and style\, sparkling with warmth and humor\, “Wild” powerfully captures the terrors and pleasures of one young woman forging ahead against all odds on a journey that maddened\, strengthened\, and ultimately healed her.” \nTRAIL RATING: Moderate (629 elevation gain) \nLENGTH: 2.5 miles RT \nCARPOOLING: Watch for an email from admin@winehikingsociety.com about 5-7 days before the event for coordination. \nALLTRAILS LINK: https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/utah/willow-lake-trail?u=i \nGEAR: \n\nThe Ten Essentials\nProper clothing / layers for winter hiking conditions\nProper footwear\nHeadlamp (which is part of the Ten Essentials)\nMicro spikes (available to rent for $12\, please e-mail admin@winehikingsociety.com to reserve)\nWater and trail snacks\nSomething lightweight to sit on while we stop to eat and drink (i.e.\, a backpacking chair\, rain jacket\, plastic bag\, etc.)\nHiking poles (optional but recommended)\n\nSince this hike is located in a watershed\, four-legged friends must stay home. \nALCOHOL NOT INCLUDED

We will likely be helping with horticulture and working outside on the grounds. After we are done we are invited to hang out and tour the aviary! \nGEAR: \n\nProper clothing / layers for winter conditions\nWater / Snacks\nClose-toed shoes\, gloves\, hat\n\nIf interested we can grab lunch afterward and enjoy a Jungle Bird Cocktail (rum\, pineapple juice and Campari)! \n[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=”4.6.6″ _module_preset=”default”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”4.6.6″ _module_preset=”default”][et_pb_button button_url=”@ET-DC@eyJkeW5hbWljIjp0cnVlLCJjb250ZW50IjoicG9zdF9saW5rX3VybF9wcm9kdWN0Iiwic2V0dGluZ3MiOnsicG9zdF9pZCI6IjI0MjU2MyJ9fQ==@” button_text=”RESERVE A SPOT” button_alignment=”left” _builder_version=”4.6.6″ _dynamic_attributes=”button_url” custom_button=”on” button_text_size=”17px” button_bg_color=”#ff6b5a” button_border_width=”5px” button_border_color=”#ff6b5a” button_border_radius=”100px” button_font=”Noto Sans|700||on|||||” button_use_icon=”off” background_layout=”dark” button_border_color_hover=”#ff9e59″ button_bg_color_hover=”#ff9e59″ locked=”off” button_text_size__hover_enabled=”off” button_one_text_size__hover_enabled=”off” button_two_text_size__hover_enabled=”off” button_text_color__hover_enabled=”off” button_one_text_color__hover_enabled=”off” button_two_text_color__hover_enabled=”off” button_border_width__hover_enabled=”off” button_one_border_width__hover_enabled=”off” button_two_border_width__hover_enabled=”off” button_border_color__hover_enabled=”on” button_border_color__hover=”#ff9e59″ button_one_border_color__hover_enabled=”off” button_two_border_color__hover_enabled=”off” button_border_radius__hover_enabled=”off” button_one_border_radius__hover_enabled=”off” button_two_border_radius__hover_enabled=”off” button_letter_spacing__hover_enabled=”off” button_one_letter_spacing__hover_enabled=”off” button_two_letter_spacing__hover_enabled=”off” button_bg_color__hover_enabled=”on” button_bg_color__hover=”#ff9e59″ button_one_bg_color__hover_enabled=”off” button_two_bg_color__hover_enabled=”off”][/et_pb_button][et_pb_code _builder_version=”4.6.6″ _module_preset=”default” text_orientation=”center”][/et_pb_code][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section]
